The sharing session for “The Blossoming Path: Calligraphy Exhibition in Celebration of the 10th Anniversary of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen”
On April 30th, the sharing session for “The Blossoming Path: Calligraphy Exhibition in Celebration of the 10th Anniversary of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen” was successfully held in the University Library of CUHK-Shenzhen.
Before the sharing session, Mr. Cao Yingwang, the curator, Professor Xu Yangsheng, President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and other guests viewed the exhibition at TC101 SPACE once again and shared the stories behind the setting up of the exhibition.
At the sharing session, Professor Xu Yangsheng, President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Mr. Cao Yingwang, the curator of the exhibition, Mr. Chen Xiangbo, Chairman of Shenzhen Artists Association, Mr. Li Jing, Chairman of Shenzhen Calligraphers Association, and Mr. Meng Jianmin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering gathered under the Large Bookcase Wall and had an in-depth exchange of ideas with the audience on calligraphy, art and aesthetics.
Professor Xu Yangsheng, President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, was invited to speak. He shared with the audience his insights on “the connection between science and art”. He said that calligraphy is a unique art form in China, but has common attributes with all kinds of art. As a calligraphy enthusiast with a background in science and engineering, he believes that calligraphy is a form of “beauty”, which is both rational and emotional. Therefore, in the art of calligraphy, in addition to structure and stroke, sensibility is also an aspect that cannot be ignored. President Xu thus talked about the importance of sensibility in university education, and how theoretical knowledge and the mind's perception of beauty are both important issues for human development. Mr. Chen Xiangbo, Chairman of Shenzhen Artists Association, Mr. Li Jing, Chairman of Shenzhen Calligraphers Association, Mr. Meng Jianmin, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Mr. Zhao Yongjin, President of Shenzhen Calligraphy Institute, Mr. Yu Yanfeng, Vice Chairman of Shenzhen Calligraphers Association, and Mr. Cao Yingwang, curator of the exhibition, also discussed on “Calligraphy and Life”, “Calligraphy and Creation” and other topics.
At the end of the sharing session, in response to a question from the audience on the imitation and copying of art by artificial intelligence and robots under the current intense development of science and technology, President Xu emphasized that human beings should pay more attention to the emotional parts that cannot be replaced by machines, such as emotion, courage, imagination and creativity. He believes that art is the protagonist of the future world. It is important not only to value the "virtue" of Chinese culture and the "truth" of Western culture, but also to grasp the "beauty" that spans the East and the West, tradition and modernity. Because behind it is the essence of human nature, which does not change even when there is a change of heart.
President Xu's summary resonated widely with the guests and members of the audience, which brought the sharing session to a successful conclusion. At the end of the event, a collection of works from the “The Blossoming Path: Calligraphy Exhibition” became the best souvenir, allowing the audience to continue to reminisce about calligraphy and art while enjoying the ink and brushwork in the book.
