The Chorus
The Chorus of The Chinese University of Hong Kong,Shenzhen
The Chorus of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen was formerly the CUHK-Shenzhen Student Chorus (established in October 2014) and the CUHK-Shenzhen Staff Chorus (established in August 2015). In 2019, the two choruses were officially merged into a university-level chorus. Since its establishment, adhering to the concept of innovation and diversification, the Chorus has been successful in performing a wide range of classical and popular songs in Chinese and foreign languages, including The Water Dance of Lluvia, Baba Yetu, Sogno di Volare, Bright Smile and Time to Say Goodbye. In 2023, it won the first prize in the Non-professional Choral Vocal Music Category of the Third Greater Bay Area University Students Art Festival and the first prize in the Vocal Category (Group A) in the 7th Guangdong Province University Students' Art Exhibition and Performance Activity. It has also performed in grand events, including 2024 Sing My Heart To You - Special Concert of the Chorus of CUHK-Shenzhen, 2024 "The Next Station Is CUHK-Shenzhen" Chorus Concert (10th Anniversary Special Session), 2023 concert of "A Dream of Red Mansions" with WU Bixia at Guangming Culture & Art Center, 2023 "Joys Shared with the Greater Bay Area" - Allegro Singers 59th Anniversary Concert at Hong Kong City Hall, 2023 Shekou Vocal Arts Festival, 2023 CUHK-Shenzhen Chorus Concert of Chinese Choral Works, 2022 “Shared Root, Shared Future” CUHK & CUHK-Shenzhen Online Performance Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR, 2022 Pleasure in the Pandemic Joint Performance hosted by CUHK, the Annual Concert of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen from 2015 to 2023 at Poly Theatre and Shenzhen Concert Hall, the Opening of the 6th National University Student Art Exhibition at Chengdu City Concert Hall, 2019 Shenzhen Universities' Student Chorus Concert “Ode to the Motherland” at Shenzhen Grand Theatre, the Longgang Water Music Concert from 2018 to 2019 at Shenzhen Universiade Centre, 2021 CUHK-Shenzhen “Starry·Sky” Choral Concert, 2021 CUHK-Shenzhen “Music in the Cloud” Concert, and 2017 CUHK-Shenzhen Student Chorus Concert at Longgang Cultural Centre. In recent years, the Chorus is keen on A Cappella group-singing performance and adapted several popular songs, including Stars, We Are Young, Weiwei, Manta, Draw, Won't Cry and Kill This Love. The Chorus also selected some excellent A Cappella songs for audio recording and MV production. During the fight against the COVID-19 epidemic, the Chorus produced an original song Heroes in Harm's Way as a salute to the frontline workers. After nearly nine years of development, it has become an influential chorus that masters various music styles.
The Orchestra and The Chamber Group
The Orchestra of The Chinese University of HongKong, Shenzhen
The Orchestra of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen was established in 2015, composing of undergraduates who were from different schools and majors, and got together because of their passion for classical music. Starting from 2019, The Orchestra officially became a university-level Orchestra, composing of students, staff and alumni. The Orchestra has been dedicated to the development of classical music on campus, and the promotion of both classical and modern music. It has organised the 2024 Sunset Concert Vol.5: Sunset Flows Into Music, 2023 “Tuesday with Orchestra” CUHK-Shenzhen Orchestra Concert, “Sound of Chamber Music” Principal Quintet Concert of CUHK-Shenzhen Orchestra, and participated in the Annual Concert of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen at Poly Theatre in 2015 and at Shenzhen Concert Hall from 2016 to 2023, 2017 CUHK-Shenzhen Student Chorus Concert at Longgang Cultural Centre, 2019 Longgang Water Music Concert at Shenzhen Universiade Centre, 2021 CUHK-Shenzhen “Starry·Sky” Choral Concert, 2021 CUHK-Shenzhen “Music in the Cloud” Concert, and giving performances independently or collaborating with the Chorus of CUHK-Shenzhen to perform excellent music pieces such as Peer Gynt, Pirates of the Caribbean, L'Arlesienne, The Complete Harry Potter, Pomp and Circumstance, War Song of Kings and Main Theme.
In November 2020, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra launched the University-troupe Cooperation project, which includes the cooperation in courses and performances. In July 2021, the Orchestra was invited to participate in the filming of the promotional video of The Readers II by China Central Television at Pingshan Grand Theatre. As a university-level art group, the Orchestra is planning to perform more classical pieces in the future.
The Chamber Group of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen
The Chamber Group was originally an Interest Group of the Orchestra of CUHK-Shenzhen established in 2016. It was formally established as the Chamber Group of CUHK-Shenzhen in 2021. Today, it has grown into a well-recognized campus-level chamber group.
The Chamber Group primarily specializes in string quintets and saxophone quartets, receiving guidance from the principal musicians of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra. They have delivered numerous unforgettable musical experiences to the citizens, students, and faculty members at venues such as the Shenzhen Concert Hall, Bay Opera of Shenzhen, and the university campus. Their repertoire includes notable works such as Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21, the melodious Serenade No. 13 for Strings in G Major, Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, as well as captivating compositions like Joe Hisaishi's Castle in the Sky and Kikujiro's Summer. In May 2023, the Chamber Orchestra presented the "Sounds of Chamber Music" concert, featuring a quintet formation, at the Bay Opera of Shenzhen. Under the baton and piano performance of conductor Cho Ki Jacky WONG, the concert showcased selected works by classical masters such as Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, displaying exceptional performance skills and artistic expression.
The Chinese Orchestra
The Chinese Orchestra of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen
The Chinese Orchestra of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen was established in August 2018. It gathers Chinese music lovers in the University, with members playing a number of musical instruments such as Guzheng, Pipa, Liuqin, Yangqin, Erhu, Dizi, Sheng, and ethnic percussions, forming a relatively complete Chinese orchestra setting. Since its foundation, the Chinese Orchestra has participated in many activities inside and outside the University, and held many online and offline sharing lectures. The Chinese Orchestra also leads its members to enjoy various Chinese music activities to enhance their music literacy and popularize the knowledge of Chinese music. In 2024, the Chinese Orchestra has held “Melodies in the Joyful Spring - Special Concert presented by the Chinese Orchestra of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen”, which was the first off-campus public charity performance by the Chinese Orchestra of CUHK-Shenzhen. It has also held 2022 CUHK-Shenzhen Chinese Orchestra Concert of Chinese Music, participated in the Annual Concert of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen held in Shenzhen Concert Hall many times. It has also participated in performances at the 2021 CUHK-Shenzhen “Music in the Cloud” Concert, several University ceremonies, Lantern Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival Evening Parties. The Chinese Orchestra has accumulated a high reputation in the University and brought the charm of Chinese classical music to the campus community.
Their performances include Rising Higher Step by Step, Dance of the Yao People, The Legend of the Condor Heroes, Dance of Picking Tea, Drought Thunder, Rambling around the Flower Stream, Blue and White Porcelain and Fade Away. Among them, the folk chamber music version of Rambling around the Flower Stream was premiered at CUHK-Shenzhen 2021 Concert by the Chinese Orchestra, which was well received by the audience.
In the future, the Chinese Orchestra aims to demonstrate and explore the charm of Chinese music, as well as popularize specialized knowledge. The Chinese Orchestra will continue to help those interested in Chinese music improve their skills and broaden their horizon, bring classic works to the public, making the culture of Chinese music come to fruition on campus.
The A Cappella Group
The A Cappella Group of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen
The A Cappella Group of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen was officially established in 2022. It was initiated and guided by Miss Miette He, the head of the Art Groups of the University Arts Centre. Before the official establishment, the founders had already personally adapted, composed and sung Chinese and foreign A Cappella works of different styles, like Weiwei, Heroes in Harm's Way, gradually attracting more and more attention and love to this music form.
The A Cappella Group of CUHK-Shenzhen is now active in various on-campus and off-campus performance stages such as music festivals, concerts, and the Greater Bay Area A Cappella Elite Exchange Art Week. The A Cappella Group of CUHK-Shenzhen also held ”Seasons of Love” A Cappella Concert and “For Love · For Graduation” A Cappella Music Party on campus in 2023.
There are multiple representative works, such as Stars, We Are Young, Misbehavin, and the MV Youth, The Light Chaser and I Just Called to Say I Love You. The team will continue to progress and create more works of different styles, and plan to hold special performances on campus, produce more MVs and short videos, and look forward to cooperating with outstanding A Cappella groups outside the campus.
With the continuous development of the art groups, in addition to recruiting performance members, we also need you to join the Student Assistants Team, so as to constantly enrich and improve the organizational structure of art groups. Therefore, in the coming academic year 2024, we will also recruit three types of student assistants, including Librarian, General Affairs and Performances, and New Media Operation.
