About Shenzhen Theatre

Shenzhen Theatre (Time-honored Brand) was originally built in 1960 and rebuilt in 1997. It is regarded as the birthplace of Shenzhen’s cultural scene and a major base for arts promotion in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area. Located at the entrance of the Dongmen Cultural Block and adjacent to Shenzhen Guesthouse and the Shenzhen Workers Cultural Palace, the theatre has hosted numerous heads of state, including Prince Sihanouk of Cambodia. Many important national conferences and art performances have been held here, and for more than half a century, it has carried the cultural imprints of countless Shenzhen people. Notably, the first foreign investment agreement in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone—the Pepsi Cola project—was signed at the theatre’s “Negotiation Office.” Premier ZHOU Enlai once praised Shenzhen Theatre as the first theatre in New China equipped with a VIP lounge and air conditioning, making it one of the most prestigious cultural landmarks of its time.

Shenzhen Theatre is equipped with a 583-seat professional theatre, a 172-seat multifunctional hall, and four cinema halls, making it the only state-owned integrated theatre and cinema complex in Shenzhen. Over the years, the theatre has organised and curated a wide range of cultural activities, including The Exhibition of Renowned Opera Artists and Productions in Shenzhen, Our Festivals—Shenzhen Folk Music Season, Children’s Performance Season, Cantonese Opera on Weekends, Shenzhen Senior Singers Competition, Renowned Opera Artists and Productions on Campuses, and the Morning Tea Opera Appreciation Lecture Series. It has also curated and promoted performances of Peking Opera, Kun Opera, Henan Opera, Huangmei Opera, Ping Opera, and Sichuan Opera, with nearly 200 performances planned annually. The theatre has launched the “XiBo” online streaming platform, attracting a combined annual audience of about 8 million both online and offline. In addition, it hosts nearly 100 venue rental events for enterprises and institutions each year, screens around 15,000 films annually, and receives about 500,000 theatre and cinema visitors, making significant contributions to the promotion and development of China’s fine traditional culture.
